The Christianburg Institute, Lynchburg Normal School, and Alexandria Normal School are all established.

Philadelphia Quakers establish the Christiansburg Institute; the Pennsylvania Freedmen’s Relief Association establishes the Lynchburg Normal School; and the National Freedmen’s Relief Association establishes the Alexandria Normal School.
