Rufus W. Griswold publishes The Works of the Late Edgar Allan Poe, as well as an unjust and inflammatory fifty-page memoir detailing Poe’s life. This sketch helps in part to create the caricature of Poe that has survived in American literary legend—as a death-obsessed, drug-addled debaucher.
