Union general George G. Meade considers a full-scale assault against Robert E. Lee’s retreating Army of Northern Virginia, which is trapped against a rain-swelled Potomac River. Meade cancels the attack when his subordinates advise against it giving Lee the opportunity to escape. He slips his army across the river during the night.
