James Lawson Kemper runs as the Conservative candidate for Virginia governor against Radical Republican nominee Robert W. Hughes, with backing from former Confederates Jubal Early, Fitzhugh Lee, John Singleton Mosby, and William Mahone—but not from Henry A. Wise. Kemper wins by a huge margin of more than 25,000 votes.
