A writer attacks Madison Hemings’s claim to be the son of Thomas Jefferson.

In “Life Among the Lowly,” an editorial published by the Waverly (Ohio) Watchman on March 18, 1873, a writer attacks the recollections of Madison Hemings, which five days earlier appeared in the Pike County Republican, edited by S. F. Wetmore. Born a slave at Monticello and then living in Ohio, Hemings claimed to be the son of Thomas Jefferson.
