Central State Hospital in Petersburg

This colored postcard depicts the buildings and grounds of Central State Hospital in Petersburg. The Central Lunatic Asylum, as it was originally known, was organized in 1870 as a psychiatric facility for African Americans and was not desegregated until after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The first patients were housed in a former Confederate hospital; in 1885 the hospital moved to the site shown here.
