Cato Ramsay’s Passport

This is an example of the passports issued in 1783 by Brigadier General Samuel Birch to the refugees who had self-emancipated from their enslavers and joined the British during the American Revolution. Many of them had seen action as members of Dunmore's Ethiopian Regiment. A man named Cato Ramsay carried this passport with him to Nova Scotia.
