Carte de la Baie de Chesapeake…
This map of the Chesapeake Bay was drawn under the order of Antoine Raymond Jean Gualbert Gabriel de Sartine, comte d’Alby, the French secretary of state for the navy from 1774 to 1780. It is based on a map published in 1776 by Anthony Smith, a pilot in Saint Mary’s County, Maryland, who had worked with the British navy in surveying the Potomac River. The map includes detailed instructions on how to navigate between Middle Ground and Horseshoe Shoals, how to enter the James River, and how to sail from Love Point to the Patapsco River.
