Campers at Camp Lichtman

This photograph shows a group of children attending Camp Lichtman, one of the group of campsites which made up Chopawamsic park in Prince William County. Camp Lichtman opened in 1938 as the summer camp of Washington D.C.’s Twelfth Street YMCA, funded by Jewish theater owner Abe Lichtman. The segregated camp, which cost $14 to attend for two weeks, had the tagline “The nation’s finest camp for Negro youth.”
