Burkley Bullock and University of Virginia Yearbook Cover

An indistinct photographic portrait of Burkley Bullock, at right, is paired with the cover of the 1890 edition of Corks and Curls, the yearbook produced by students at the University of Virginia. Bullock was a successful Black entrepreneur, real estate broker, investor, community organizer, and owner of a restaurant frequented by the university students. Despite Bullock's prominence in the local Black community, the students produced a stereotypical and demeaning profile him in the yearbook, describing him as "one of the best surviving representatives of the old plantation hand."
