This 1867 map of Brunswick County created by Jedediah Hotchkiss, a skilled topographical engineer who had served with the Confederacy during the Civil War, is a detailed rendering of all the existing roads (in red), creeks (in blue), bridges, ferries, towns, mills, stores, churches, taverns, the county courthouse and poor house. The largely rural county in Southside borders North Carolina.
