Billy Flora at Great Bridge

William “Billy” Flora, a Black member of the Virginia militia, runs from two armed British soldiers toward shelter in this folk art painting. He is the last man outside of the breastworks, illustrating his famous stand against British fire at the Battle of Great Bridge. Folk artist Ray Wilson completed this painting in 1978. It is currently held in the collections of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.
