A portrait of Elizabeth Hobbs Keckly (identified here as “Keckley”) serves as the frontispiece for her memoir, Behind the Scenes: Or, Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House. The formerly enslaved Keckly was a skilled dressmaker who worked for, and served as a confidante to, Mary Todd Lincoln, the wife of President Abraham Lincoln.
