Battle of Eutaw Springs
This hand-colored steel engraving shows Continental Army general Nathanael Greene, riding a white horse, commanding his forces at the September 8, 1781, Battle of Eutaw Springs. American history illustrator Alonzo Chappel produced this image for historian Henry B. Dawson’s book, Battles of the United States (1858.) The battle took place on the south side of the Santee River near Eutaw Springs, South Carolina. British forces had been encamped near the Roche Plantation, the brick manor house visible on the right side of this illustration. Eutaw Springs ended without a clear victor, but heavy losses forced the British to withdraw towards Charleston. This proved to be a boon for Greene’s rocky but eventually successful military campaign in the South.
