Janie Porter Barrett Day Nursery
A woman—probably a caregiver—and two small children pose on the steps of the Janie Porter Barrett Day Nursery in Charlottesville. The nursery was founded in 1935 in the Vinegar Hill neighborhood of Charlottesville—the center of the city's African American community after the Civil War until the 1960s when the neighborhood was razed as part of an urban renewal project. Named after the educator and social activist Janie Porter Barrett, the childcare center (currently known as the Barrett Early Learning Center) remains in operation at a different location.
