It’s that time of year, and whether you’re sharpening your pencils and gathering your notebooks or a lifelong learner, Encyclopedia Virginia is here to support all your educational endeavors. It’s the place where anyone curious about Virginia’s past can access trustworthy history—free of charge.
This back-to-school season, we’re asking you to support EV at a particularly important moment. Reliable information can be difficult to find online, and public funding for the humanities has declined. Your gift helps ensure that everyone has access to the full story of Virginia’s history, told through rigorous scholarship, diverse perspectives, and engaging digital resources.
And right now, your gift can go twice as far. Thanks to generous donors, every dollar you give will be matched, up to $5,000. Together, we’re aiming to raise $10,000 to support Encyclopedia Virginia.
Will you help us reach our $10,000 goal—and double your impact?
With your support, we can:
- Keep EV accessible to everyone. More than 2 million people visit Encyclopedia Virginia each year to find reliable information about the Commonwealth’s history and culture.
- Complete a special section on the American Revolution in Virginia, exploring the Commonwealth’s pivotal role in the nation’s founding as we mark the 250th anniversary of the Revolution.
- Expand and maintain EV’s rich digital resources, including more than 1,300 entries, 1,100 primary-source transcriptions, 10,000 media objects, and more than 60 virtual tours.
- Support teachers through curriculum resources, professional development opportunities, and our annual EV Educator Fellowship.
- Bring Virginia’s history to the public with free EntryPoint webinars connecting Virginia’s past to the present.
- Continue working with Virginia’s tribal communities to ensure that their voices, histories, and perspectives are represented in EV.
Your support makes it possible for us to provide high-quality historical information to anyone, anywhere, without a paywall.
As a special thank-you, donors who give $25 or more will receive exclusive access to our new e-book, Virginia Women during the American Revolution. Donors who give $75 or more will receive an exclusive Encyclopedia Virginia tote bag.
Thank you for believing in the importance of accessible, inclusive, and trustworthy history.
