In this letter dated December 5, 1775, Patriot colonel William Woodford informs Edmund Pendleton, president of Virginia’s Fourth Revolutionary Convention, about two Black prisoners named George and Ned whom Lieutenant Colonel Edward Stevens’s forces captured from the British at Great Bridge. Woodford includes his officers’ examination of George and Ned. Their testimony shares information about the number of Black soldiers in the British forces and the kinds of work they did in preparation for the Battle of Great Bridge.
