In this travel journal, the Englishman William Hugh Grove records the events and observations associated with his visit to Virginia in 1732. He sailed to Virginia aboard the York in the company of Cornelius Lyde, a Virginia planter and son of the ship’s owner, Lyonel Lyde, a Bristol tobacco merchant. Once in Virginia, Grove stayed for a time with the merchant John Dixon.
