In this 1831 petition for a land bounty on behalf of Cesar Tarrant’s daughter Nancy Tarrant, Thomas Green summarizes Cesar Tarrant’s naval service as an enslaved man during the Revolutionary War and the affidavits of two men he served with. Nancy Tarrant successfully applied for a land grant for her father’s service in accordance with a 1779 law providing bounty land in present-day Ohio and Kentucky for Revolutionary War soldiers if they served at least three years continuously in the state or Continental Line. Nancy Tarrant used the proceeds from selling the land to free additional family members.
