In this advertisement published in the November 16, 1775, issue of Pinkney’s Virginia Gazette, Robert Brent describes the escape of Charles, an enslaved man whom Brent suspects of attempting to join to the fleet of the royal governor John Murray, fourth earl of Dunmore. Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation offered freedom to people enslaved by Patriots. Charles was eventually arrested, purchased by the state of Virginia, and sent to Chiswell’s lead mines, which he attempted to escape twice.
