In "Horrible Tragedy," reprinted from the Missouri Republican and published on May 24, 1835, the Raleigh Register and North-Carolina Gazette reports on the lynching of a free black man, Francis McIntosh, accused of resisting arrest and killing a white law enforcement officer. Other accounts suggest that McIntosh merely refused to help a policeman capture a suspect in an unrelated case, and attacked the officer when he was threatened with five years in prison.
