Affidavit of Powhatan Bouldin (November 14, 1883)

This affidavit by Powhatan Bouldin, editor of the Danville Times, was submitted on November 14, 1883. It reproduces a story Bouldin published in the Times about a speech given by W. E. Sims, chairman of Pittsylvania County‘s Readjuster Party denouncing the Danville Circular, which in turn had denounced Readjuster rule in general and African Americans in particular. On November 3, the day after Sims’s speech, a street fight in Danville escalated into violence and left at least five people dead. Bouldin’s affidavit was published by the so-called Committee of Forty, appointed by city officials to investigate the incident.
