In her will signed on July 26, 1843, Nancy Tarrant arranges for the freeing of several enslaved family members. Nancy Tarrant was the daughter of Cesar Tarrant, who was a pilot in the Virginia Navy during the Revolutionary War. The funds Nancy Tarrant used to purchase her family members’ freedom came from selling bounty land she received due to Cesar Tarrant’s service. This copy of the will was written in 1869 after the original was destroyed.
