In this February 28, 1781, letter to Thomas Jefferson, Mary Willing Byrd explains the events that led her to be accused of treason for illegally trading with British soldiers after they occupied her Westover plantation in 1781. Byrd became the executrix of her husband William Byrd III’s estate after his suicide in 1777.
