Petition of the Inhabitants of Loudoun County (January 8, 1776)

In this petition submitted to the Fourth Virginia Revolutionary Convention on January 8, 1776, tenants in Loudoun County request relief from rent and tax payments due to the decline of the grain and flour trade following the nonexportation movement and the British embargo of American exports. A tenant revolt broke out across Virginia in the fall of 1775 as tenants refused to pay rent and taxes imposed to help fund the war.
