King George III’s Privy Council issued this proclamation on October 7, 1763, after France ceded significant territory to Britian at the end of the Seven Years’ War. Part of the proclamation forbids white settlement in land west of the Appalachian Mountains, setting it aside for Native tribes. Many Virginians moved westward anyway, causing conflict with tribes.
