John Warner Campaign Fundraiser Speech (March 4, 2002)

In this March 4, 2002, fundraising speech for his U.S. Senate campaign, John W. Warner touts his achievements from working with the other Virginia senator at the time, George Allen, as well as the George W. Bush administration, especially Vice President Richard Cheney, whom he introduces as the main speaker of the event. Warner argues for the importance of increased military spending for the country’s security, and for Virginia as the recipient of so much of that spending. In 2001, federal defense spending by state was the second highest in Virginia, home of the Pentagon, numerous military bases, and a high percentage of federal defense contract spending. Warner won this campaign, his last, on November 5, 2002.

In this interview with political scientist Larry Sabato on July 31, 2019, John W. Warner describes his first campaign for U.S. Senate. He tells a story about how invoking his Virginia heritage helped him win the election in 1978, defeating the Democratic Party’s nominee, Andrew P. Miller. His ancestors lived in Amherst County dating back to the eighteenth century. Members of his father’s family enslaved people through to the American Civil War (1861–1865). This interview took place at a forum on the future of representative democracy at the College of William and Mary to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Virginia General Assembly, the oldest continuous legislative body in the Western Hemisphere.
