Petition of John Sturdivant (June 18, 1783)

In this petition to the General Assembly dated June 18, 1783, John Sturdivant, guardian for an orphan named Jane Sturdivant, seeks compensation for Lewis, a man Jane enslaved, who was taken by British forces during Benedict Arnold’s raid on Richmond. Lewis was serving in the Virginia Navy during the raid.
