Smith, Smith describes his journey from being born into enslavement in Campbell County to becoming a founding pastor of several churches, a teacher, and a member of the board of managers of Virginia Seminary in Lynchburg. As a demonstration of the role that faith has played in his life, he includes two of his sermons.
