Letter from James Currie to Thomas Jefferson (November 20, 1784)

In a letter dated November 20, 1784, James Currie informs Thomas Jefferson, then living in France, of the death in Virginia of his daughter Lucy Elizabeth. Lucy’s temporary guardians, Francis and Elizabeth Eppes, had written Jefferson a month earlier with the news, but the letter had not yet arrived when Currie, the doctor who had treated Lucy Jefferson at the Eppes’ home, messengered the news.
