Margaret Ward Morland was the Poet Laureate of Virginia from 1996 to 1998 and was an accomplished educator and poet. Two volumes of her poetry were published: It Happens Thus (1983) and Gift of Jade (1998), while more than sixty of her poems have been set to music and performed by choral groups across the United States. Her poetry was marked by hopefulness and a wealth of experience, expressing interests in the human condition and theology. Morland was awarded the National Lutheran Hymn Prize and the Birmingham-Southern College Cecil Hackney Literary Award. She received the Conrad Aiken Prize of the Poetry Society of Georgia, the Nancy Byrd Turner Prize of the Poetry Society of Virginia, and the Distinguished Alumna Award of Samford University. Morland died on September 8, 2022.
