Letter from Henry Knox to Thomas Shilds (September 30, 1781)

In this letter from September 30, 1781, Major General Henry Knox, chief of the Continental Army artillery, orders Thomas Shilds, captain of the schooner Betsy, to gather oak planks to aid preparations for the siege of Yorktown and authorizes impressment to acquire the wood. The Continental Army used vast quantities of wood throughout the war.
