Author: Edward Bland

“The discovery of New Brittaine. Began August 27. anno Dom. 1650.” (1651)

In this pamphlet, published in 1651, Edward Bland writes about his expedition in summer 1650 to regions southwest of European settlements in Virginia. Bland joined Abraham Wood, a fur trader, who hoped the expedition would open up new trading opportunities. Bland probably hoped to establish a family claim to a large part of the Piedmont of what is now North Carolina. After his return, the General Assembly endorsed his plan to colonize the region. His account of the expedition described his encounters with numerous tribal communities.
