In this 1821 petition, Choroenhaka (Nottoway) chief Edith “Edy” Turner (also known as Wané Roonseraw) asks the General Assembly to divide the tribe’s reservation land into individual allotments. She hoped to convince more tribal members to adopt white farming practices in order to prevent the sale of reservation land. Turner and others signed the petition with their Nottoway names as well as their English names.
