In this August 1783 excerpt from the minutes of the Board of Commissioners for Superintending Embarkations included within the Book of Negroes, the commissioners consider the case of Dinah Archey (also referred to as Archer). The board was established to examine claims to property from American enslavers in compliance with the Treaty of Paris (1783). Archey was enslaved in Virginia but joined British forces during the American Revolution. In this petition, Archey defends her right to freedom rather than being returned to slavery. Archey eventually won her case and traveled with the British to Nova Scotia in September 1783.
