“To the Ladies of the South,” 1853

In this letter published in the Charleston Mercury on December 2, 1853, a woman identifying herself as “A Southern Matron” urges the women of the South to raise money to purchase and restore Mount Vernon, the plantation home of George Washington, which had fallen into disrepair and was in danger of being sold to developers. The letter was the beginning of a successful national campaign that raised the $200,000 needed to purchase the estate and led to the founding of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association by its author, Ann Pamela Cunningham.
