Objects Made by Enslaved Blacksmiths at Montpelier

These are samples of ironwork found during 2020 excavations at the site of the blacksmith and farrier shop at Montpelier, James Madison's Virginia plantation in Orange County. Enslaved blacksmiths at the shop fashioned items such as nails (at top right) and the blade for a hoe (at bottom). The missing section of the hoe was chiseled out by an enslaved worker in order to re-purpose the iron and create another item.
