Arthur Lee

Arthur Lee, a member of the commission that secured the 1778 Treaty of Alliance in France, is the subject of this miniature portrait by the artist John Trumbull. When he sat for the portrait in New York in 1790 Lee had recently stepped down from his position on the Board of Treasury. Trumbull may have intended for this miniature to be used in his planned but never executed painting, the Treaty of Peace.
