Arthur Campbell’s Signature

This is land speculator and politician Arthur Campbell’s signature as it appears on a deposition he gave on October 21, 1778, regarding a 1774 negotiation with the Cherokee about a western land purchase on behalf of Virginians Patrick Henry and William Christian. Accused of overstepping his instructions, Campbell replied, “my anxiety to have the back country settled might have induced me to go further lengths than any instructions I had, strictly justified.”
