Grave of Andrew Lewis
This postcard shows the grave of military officer Andrew Lewis. Lewis was buried in 1781 near his family home in Richfield, but in 1887 his remains were reinterred in East Hill Cemetery in Salem, Virginia. The postcard notes that in 1767 Lewis “was allotted a grant of land consisting of 625 acres and from this territory the town of Salem was later laid out.” In 1900 the House of Representatives voted to contribute $5,000 to erect a monument at his gravesite.
