Andrew Lewis

Andrew Lewis, officer during the Seven Years’ War (1754–1763), the Virginia commissioner to the Treaty of Fort Stanwix (1768), soldier in Lord Dunmore’s War (1774), and a brigadier general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution (1775–1783), appears in a fringed hunting shirt on the Virginia Washington Monument in Richmond’s Capitol Square. The monument, begun by Thomas Crawford in 1850 and completed during the Civil War, includes the statues of Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, John Marshall, George Mason, and Thomas Nelson Jr., surrounding the central equestrian statue of George Washington.
