An Act to Indemnify William Campbell…

The Virginia General Assembly, under Governor Thomas Jefferson, passed this act in October of 1779. It protects William Campbell and Walter Crockett, as well as other Continental militia, from legal retaliation by people who they injured in quashing a Loyalist rebellion. The insurrection took place along the New River, where large groups of Loyalists began to organize in the summer of 1779, making plans to destroy strategically valuable lead mines in Montgomery County.
