Alexandria African American Heritage Park

This photograph shows the central sculptures of the Alexandria African American Heritage Park, with Carlyle Development apartment buildings in the background. Sculptor Jerome Meadows designed the memorial sculptures, entitled “Truths That Rise from the Roots Remembered,” to resemble a group of bronze trees. The nine-acre park, which includes a historic Black cemetery, was created in 1995 to commemorate Alexandria’s Black history.
