Petersburg Register of Free Negroes

The Petersburg Register of Free Negroes dated January 21, 1864, lists Julia Ann Morgan, wife of Peter G. Morgan, and three of their daughters—Julia Anna, about twelve years old; Mary Davis, about nine years old; and Virginia Michigan, about five years old—as having registered as free people in compliance with state law. The document further notes that the four females, all of them described as having a "mulatto complexion," had been emancipated from slavery by Peter G. Morgan on January 15, 1864.
