St. Paul’s Graduating Class and Physical Training, St. Paul’s School
At top, the co-ed graduating class of 1924 at Saint Paul Normal and Industrial School in Lawrenceville poses with a school banner. At bottom, an all-girls class takes part in physical education at the school. Both photographs were taken by "The Brown's" photo studio, a family-run photography business in Richmond that recorded African American life for seventy years, from 1899 until 1969. These images were published in Our Church Industrial High Schools for Negroes (1925), a pamphlet produced "under the supervision of the American Church Institute for Negroes," an auxiliary of the National Council of the Protestant Episcopal Church.
