Scene in the House on the Passage of the Proposition to Amend the Constitution, January 31, 1865.

An engraving published on the cover of the February 18, 1865, edition of Harper's Weekly depicts the scene on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on January 31, 1865, after the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery. While some members in the House remain seated, others raise their hats to celebrate the ratification, which required a two-thirds vote by the House.
