The Great Financial Panic.

This wood engraving from the October 4, 1873, edition of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper depicts angry members of the New York Stock Exchange, who are being denied entrance to the exchange building on Saturday, September 20, 1873. A series of bank failures that September led to a financial panic and the closure of the Stock Exchange for ten days. The Panic of 1873 triggered a long economic recession.
