Going to the trenches—a sketch in Camp Winfield Scott. Before Yorktown
Union soldiers march in formation with shovels over their shoulders in a pencil drawing by Alfred R. Waud, a wartime correspondent for Harper's Weekly. This drawing, signed by Waud at lower right, was created in May 1862 at Camp Winfield Scott in Yorktown; it was published as an engraving in Harper's on June 14, 1862.
Union soldiers dug their own trenches at the battlefront, while Confederate soldiers generally depended on enslaved laborers.
