D. Webster Davis is the subject of this photographic portrait published in Twentieth Century Negro Literature, or, A Cyclopedia of Thought on the Vital Topics Relating to the American Negro (1902), a book written by "one hundred of America's greatest Negroes" and edited by Daniel Wallace Culp. The Illustrations surrounding the portrait depict, at left, enslaved African Americans being whipped, and, at right, educated free men of color writing and delivering an oration. At the bottom of the illustrated border, the shackles of slavery have been opened.
