Fredson Bowers

Fredson Bowers, pictured above in a faculty portrait, was a professor of English at the University of Virginia from 1938 to 1975. He served as chair of the English Department from 1961 to 1968, as dean of the faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1968 and 1969, and is credited with raising the department to national prominence. A noted scholar in bibliography and textual criticism, he was founder and editor of Studies in Bibliography.
